Anja (Ait 410 x Time 398) 16hh Ride & Drive Mare. DOB: 2008
1st Premie, CHAMPION FOAL and RESERVE BREED CHAMPION in 2008. 2nd Premie Ster, BEST MARE and OVERALL BREED CHAMPION 2011. 1st Premie Ster and the 'PROVISIONAL' KROON status was awarded in 2013. In 2014, Anja did the IBOP and scored 77,5 points, making her the first Kroon mare bred in Great Britain!
Anja first caught our eye when her breeder, Melanie Given bought her down from Scotland to the UK Inspections. She was incredibly pretty and had such beautiful, easy movement. Sadly Melanies circumstances changed and she had to sell Anja. Although a number of people went to see her, none of them were right and finally Melanie asked us if we would take her on as she wanted her to be given every opportunity because of the potential she had shown as a foal. We collected her on Valentines Day 2009 and she spent the next two years living with our herd of mares and youngstock. In 2011 we entered her for the UK Inspections so she could be assessed to go into the Main Studbook. Due to our own circumstances we were only able to do 3 weeks groundwork with her before the day so our expectations were not very high. She was a bit on the 'tubby' side and was not very fit but on the day she lit up when she went round the arena. KFPS jury members Louisa Hompe and Sabien Zwaga were impressed enough to award her 2nd Premie STER, Champion Mare and Overall Breed Champion, the first UK bred Friesian to achieve this success.
After an easy time over the winter we bought Anja into full time work in the Spring of 2012, backing her and getting her doing some basic schooling and hacking round the lanes and bridleways. She has been such a kind willing horse we have used her on a number of occasions on our Friesian Experience days. As part of our education we took her to a Walk and Trot dressage test at Myerscough when she had been in training a couple of months. The aim of the day was to let her take in the atmosphere and try and work in around lots of other horses. She took it all in her stride and although not the tidiest or prettiest of tests she came away with a red rosette.
2013 has seen Anja start her driving training. For those of you following us on Facebook you will have had regular updates on her progress. She has taken it all in her stride and drives single, pair and unicorn now.
The highlight of Anja's year was when she was awarded 1st Premie Ster and the Provisional Kroon status at the Inspections in August. She is the first mare bred in the UK to achieve this honour. To make the title difinitive she will now have to take part in an IBOP performance test and gain a score of 77 points or above. Since Anja is not an easy horse to ride and she is not the most forward horse, we did worry a little bit about her getting the points she needed. In August 2014 however, exactly a year after she had gotten awarded the title Provisional Kroon, Anja performed really well at the IBOP, and got a score of 77,5 points, making her title definitive. From then on, she was a Kroon mare! Anja is a beautiful mare, with a good walk and her trot was even called remarkable by the Dutch inspectors. One of her best features is her good upper line and strong back. She is a horse that loves attention and is more of a one-to-one horse than anyone else on the farm.
This year, Anja will travel to Holland where she will be inseminated, and hopefully she will come back to Greenbank Farm later this year in foal. Whilst in foal, we will still try to keep her exercised and maybe even get her out to a couple of competitions, as her schooling is really coming on. Hopefully, in 2016 she will be a first time mum, which we are all very excited about!
